The story behind the style.
STYLE NO. 2946 : ROUGHNECK
Famous for its clean lines, simple construction and classic round toe styling, the 2946 features Dirty Sand Roughneck leather, a durable Vibram Lug outsole, triple stitched quality and Goodyear welt construction.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE
In America’s 20th century, the bold and hardworking men who labored on oil rigs had one of the most dangerous occupations around. In order to do their jobs in these hazardous conditions the men needed to be tough and have a taste for challenging work. These traits were how oil rig workers received the nickname, “Roughnecks.” Inspired by these hardworking roughnecks, Red Wing’s Round Lug styles were built not only to look tough, but act tough. Their distinctively rugged appearance is enhanced by our classic Roughneck leather.

How it's made.
OIL-TANNED LEATHER
S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.
